History of Mackenzie:

 

Our Hotel is named after Alexander Mackenzie (Canadian Fur Trader) who completed the first overland journey across North America, north of Mexico, in 1793. The town of Mackenzie is on the route he traveled to reach the Pacific Ocean.

Mackenzie and area offers a variety of recreational activities. From swimming at Morfee beach to skiing at Powder King, there are adventures for every season.

Recreation in Mackenzie:

 

Morfee Beach: Located only minutes away from downtown on Centennial Drive.

 

Mackenzie Golf & Country Club: A nine hole course call 997-4004 for more information.

 

Cross Country Skiing: Over 30km of groomed trails with three warm up cabins. Contact Joan at 997-3190 for trail info.

 

Little Mac Ski Hill: A beginner hill with a tow lift located at the end of Laurier Drive call 997-5283 for further info.

 

Powder King Mountain: A 45 minute drive from Mackenzie into the Pine Pass. You can reach the info line at 1-866-POW-KING.

 

Mackenzie RV Park: Located off of Mackenzie Blvd behind city hall with 25 partial service sites and 11 tent sites.

 

Sledding: Call the Rec Centre at 997-5283 for info on the snowmobile compound and trails to Morfee Mountain. For guided tours contact Rocky Mountain Trench Adventures.

Local Sights :

 

A blue jewel just five minutes from downtown Mackenzie is Morfee Lake, a popular spot for swimming, boating, waterskiing, hiking, and ice fishing in the winter.

 

A gravel roadway provides access to Morfee Mountain - breathtaking views of Williston Lake and the Northern Rocky Mountains. The awesome powder here in winter provides great snowmobiling conditions in winter. Local mountain bikers find the climb to the top is worth the spectacular view.

 

John Dahl Regional Park, located right behind the Recreation Centre, contains 4.4 kilometres of great trails for walking, jogging, cycling, or cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. Picnic tables are located at two points overlooking majestic mountains and Morfee Lake

 

Mackenzie's landing offers a boat launch and a natural amphitheatre. This recreation area celebrates the historical significance of Sir Alexander Mackenzie's journey through the area, and includes a monument to him. Campgrounds flank the landing on the south and the north.
